When it comes to seasonal style staples, there are three things that have always felt undeniably summery to me: little white dresses, espadrilles, and stripes. While I’ve long had the LWDs and espadrilles taken care of, it’s been harder for me to find a striped shirt that feels just right. Call it Goldilocks syndrome, but I’ve found that some stripes are too wide (not flattering), some too thin (not the look I’m going for), and some are just downright more expensive than what I’d like to spend on a casual tee.
Old Navy has forever been one of my go-to sources for basics. I don’t mind replacing a $9 plain white tee after just a year or two of wear if it falls apart in the wash or starts looking worn. I’d rather save on the casual basics, and save my splurges for those special pieces that feel more unique.
But I digress.

Feeling woeful about the lack of stripes in my closet, I buzzed over to Old Navy’s website, in search of something that would cure my no-stripes summer blues for next to nothing. And oh, did it deliver.
Old Navy has a boatload of striped shirt offerings: From crew-neck tees with pockets to linen-blend tees with wide cabana stripes, there’s a stripe for every flavor of stripe-seeking summer style maven. It didn’t take long for me to spot my stripes among the mix.
With a long-winded name like the Relaxed Mariner-Stripe Thick-Knit Tee for Women, my striped pick hardly sounds easygoing, but it’s exactly the laidback-meets-polished vibe I’ve been looking for: The boat neck, heavier weight fabric, and boxy cut means it’s a tailored match for white jeans at work, while the vented sides and so-nautical stripes feel just right for weekends by the water. I chose the merlot-and-white colorway (interestingly called “White Stripe”), as it’ll work well with my fall denim, too, but the so-summery pink-and-orange and white-and-yellow were also super tempting. Who knows? I may go back and order one or two more, as the short-sleeved tees will only set you back $8-$14, depending on the color you choose.
I didn’t stop with that shirt, though. Because I was feeling like a #BigSpender the day I snapped up the above, I also treated myself to a $12 three-quarter length tee in trés chic red, white, and blue stripes. While I ordered the other tee true-to-size for a more put-together look, I ordered this one a size up so that it’s an easy, throw-on-and-go cover-up for chilly sunset beach walks and windy boat rides.
With my new striped tees on deck, I’ve officially assembled my warm-weather style trifecta. Bring it on, summertime!
