Southerners love to set a proper table and pull out The Good Silver on those special occasions where company comes for dinner. If you’re looking to supplement the family silver or want something for everyday use, there are a lot of options. However, if you wanted to buy something Made in the USA, though, you’d have to head north. That’s because the last silverware manufacturer in America is in upstate New York.
Sherrill Manufacturing, the manufacturer of the Liberty Tabletop line of flatware, is the lone flatware maker in the U.S.
The company rose from the ashes when Oneida, the world’s largest flatware producer, with manufacturing plants in four countries and annual sales of more than $500 million, moved its operations to China. In 2005, it shuttered the plant it had operated in Sherrill, New York for 125 years, the New York Times reported.

However, according to Syracuse.com, two former Oneida executives weren’t quite ready to let the plant go. They bought the company's plant in Sherrill for $1 million and reopened the plant the day after Oneida closed it. Its new name was Sherrill Manufacturing. They have been producing its Liberty Tabletop brand directly to consumers through its website, more or less ever since.
As the sole Made in the USA brand, Sherrill’s silverware is a popular choice for people who believe in supporting American businesses. That, of course, includes the federal government. They have sold silverware to the Navy, which is reportedly partial to the partial to the utilitarian Annapolis line, and to the State Department who reportedly sends silverware sets out to its embassies. Guessing they get the gorgeous Old English pattern seen in the Sheffield sets. Sherrill has been trying to get the White House to buy their silverware for use at state dinners, but it hasn’t happened yet.
