Obviously, it goes without saying that the kitchen is the heartbeat of the home. But spending so much time in this central hub and high-traffic area can lead to big messes, particularly when cooking, entertaining, and storing your precious items. Whether it’s counters congested with cookware or utensils strewn everywhere, a disorganized kitchen can induce stress and chaos. Although the junk drawer, pantry, and refrigerator get all the tidying love and attention when decluttering, there are two areas in the kitchen you’re probably overlooking: the sink and the oven.
In a demonstration with The Kitchn, organizing consultant and author Marie Kondo revealed that the areas around the sink and oven are the two most clutter-prone spots in the kitchen. Not only that, she shared some advice on how to effectively get your kitchen back in order in no time.
If you’re an avid home cook, then it’s likely your oven is cluttered with appliances, salt and pepper shakers, oil containers, and other cooking essentials. We know how important it is to have your seasonings and spices within arm’s reach, but one too many items piled on or around the stovetop can be a fire hazard. Not to mention, bubbling sauces and hot grease can lead to sticky splatters.

According to Kondo, it’s best to keep must-have ingredients in a nearby cabinet or air-tight storage containers. While you’re in the process of decluttering, it’s important to remove any culinary tools you’re not using from the utensil holder at least twice a year.
Green plants, intricate soap dispensers, decorative dish towels, and colorful sink caddies can definitely add some style to the sink area. But these items also take up a lot of unnecessary space. To have more wiggle room when washing and drying your dishes, Kondo suggests moving the drying rack to the cabinet when you’re not using it.
