One of the perks of working at Southern Living is that companies all over the South send us stuff to try. Some of it’s great. Some of it’s, well . . . we just appreciate the thought so much. But every now and then, we get something so delicious—like the best cookie delivery on the planet—that we memorize the packaging so we’ll be able to spot it in the mailroom.
These days, the most exciting news any of our editors can get is, “I think I saw a Christie Cookie Co. package in your mailbox.” Translation: “We all know you just got a dessert delivery, and we want some of those Christie cookies pronto.” The bakery won’t share its secret recipes, but our resident foodies feel confident in asserting that butter is involved.
Founder Christie Hauck launched the enterprise in the early 1980s on Nashville's Church Street. About 20 years ago, he sold it to current company president Fleming Wilt, who kept the original recipes but moved the bakery to Germantown back when the area was industrial and a little bit dicey.
More from Southern Living
“Germantown is now arguably the hottest neighborhood in Nashville, and we’re thrilled to be part of it,” said Christie Cookie Co. marketing director Caroline Sloan.
Typical holiday production, Sloan said, is around 7500 tins of cookies a day throughout November and December. We’re not surprised by the demand. Southern Living has sung the praises of these cookies before, but seriously, y’all—if you’ve never tried them, prepare yourself for a celebration of sugar, fresh eggs, milk, butter, chocolate . . . Christie Cookies taste like they just came out of Memaw’s oven, only Memaw never made cookies this huge. (And bless her heart, she could never turn out 7500 tins a day.)
Christie's giant yum factor isn't cheap—$27.99 for a dozen cookies in a decorative tin ordered online—but you do get what you pay for. And the company has a heart, offering 4 specialty cookie-filled tins that were designed by patients at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Proceeds from these go to the hospital. (See specialty tins here.)
We hear this Nashville baker is always exploring new flavors, but we’re perfectly content with the Christie classics: White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, Chocolate Chip, and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, along with the Triple Chocolate Brownie (just one brownie will set you back 390 calories, but you won’t care—that’s what treadmills are for).
Christie also has a Cookie of the Month program, offering exclusive monthly flavors both at the bakery and online. They’ve also expanded their business with retail space, a foodservice operation, and catering (within Nashville).
And if you’ve ever checked into a DoubleTree hotel and been welcomed with a warm, yummy cookie, you can thank the folks at Christie, who create the dough. It's shipped from the bakery to DoubleTree hotels nationwide, where it’s baked fresh. Christie has now crossed the 300 millionth mark with the DoubleTree Cookie.
